While on (Company name) property, attending business-related activities, on duty or operating a vehicle or equipment owned by (Company name), the use, possession, sale, transfer or distribution of any illegal drug or alcohol is strictly prohibited. (Company name) has a vital interest in maintaining a safe, healthy and efficient working environment for its employees. Driving distracted, while on-the-job, is a serious safety and health risk, not only to the driver, but to other occupants in the vehicle and other vehicles on the road.

Therefore, while operating a vehicle or equipment owned by (Company name) distracted driving (individual company must define distracted behaviors prohibited) is strictly prohibited. Any employee who is in violation of this policy may be subject to disciplinary action

Note: Distracted driving occurs when a driver is delayed in recognizing a potential hazard because of something inside or outside the vehicle diverting the driver's attention away from the road. Identify what distracted driving behaviors your company policy does or will prohibit, such as:

  • reading while driving;
  • use of remote internet equipment such as personal digital assistants or wireless e-mail;
  • personal grooming;
  • using cellular phones, pagers or beepers;
  • and looking at maps for directions.

Encourage employees to practice the following tips from General Motors In Motion Magazine –- thus helping them to reach their destination safely:

  • start your music before you put your vehicle into drive;
  • avoid changing the radio stations throughout your trip by switching to long-playing CDs or cassette tapes in the vehicle –- save the radio for at-home listening;
  • spend some time sitting in the driveway, instead of on the road, locating all your vehicle’s buttons and controls, and take this time to adjust your rearview and side mirrors for optimal driving;
  • if you receive a call on your cell phone, ask the caller to wait a minute while you pull off of the road and continue your conversation when you are safely parked, not on the go;
  • and if it becomes necessary for you to divert your eyes from the road to perform any action, pull over and park your vehicle safely first.

Sample Safety Belt Use Policy

Therefore, (Company name) is adopting the following Safety Belt Use Policy: All employees and all occupants of vehicles driven on official business will use safety belts.
